Whites will become the visible minority population in Toronto within 30 years, according to projections released yesterday by Statistics Canada that suggest the face of Canada will change dramatically in its biggest cities.

About 63 per cent of Toronto’s population would be from visible minority groups by 2031, compared to 43 per cent counted in 2006.

That compares to a projected 59 per cent of visible minorities projected for Vancouver by 2031, and 31 per cent projected for Montreal.

Smaller communities are not expected to experience the same population change as immigrants and fertility rates among certain groups significantly alter the complexion of Canada’s urban centres.
